Abstract
  • This study demonstrates how ceramic artifacts function as active, dynamic media in the continuous negotiation and formation of cultural meaning. Through rigorous analysis of 52 peer-reviewed studies, we identify and critically examine three dominant, synergistic narrative dimensions: Value Narratives, which encode ethical ideals and collective psychology through motifs like "Carp Leaping the Dragon Gate"; Technical Narratives, which embed artisanal knowledge and craft identity in production techniques and material choices; and Politico-Cultural Narratives, which project national prestige and facilitate cross-cultural exchange. The review reveals that these dimensions do not operate in isolation but interact within a complex ecosystem, enabling the ceramic tradition to adapt to historical changes while maintaining cultural continuity. In response to identified theoretical and methodological limitations in the existing literature—such as elite bias and an underappreciation of material agency—this paper proposes an innovative integrative framework: the "Narrative Reproduction Cycle." This model conceptualizes cultural identity formation as a recursive process of narrative encoding, material embodiment, interpretive engagement, and transformative recirculation. The study concludes by outlining specific future research trajectories, advocating for a 'vernacular turn,' the application of digital humanities methods, and comparative cross-cultural analysis to further elucidate the profound relationship between material culture and identity.
