Abstract
  • The study of pragmatism in Islam has become a subject of transition and change in terms of modern thinking and behaviours among Muslims. Ahmad Fekry Ibrahim disclosed his research of the applications and evolutions of a strategy that consists of applying the legal pragmatism inherent in Sunni Islam in an eclectic approach to attain pragmatic ends. Therefore, it is crucial to comprehend extensively through studies on the matter of pragmatism as one of the significant components in Muslims’ daily practices. In essence, the term pragmatism is not present in relation to Islamic matters, but Islamic scholars are more familiar with the term and discussion on pragmatics. So, it is interesting to explore whether pragmatics is regarded as one of the features of pragmatism, and the extend of applying the terms. As we know, modernity and globalisation have been challenging for Muslims. According to Fazlur Rahman, the current realities and challenges faced by Muslims nowadays cannot be logically compared to the situation in the past therefore requiring transformation and correction in the ways Muslims approach those issues. This paper will examine in detail the kinds and classification of changes practiced by Muslims, specifically in Malaysia these days in terms of their practicality and pragmatism. This paper investigates many possible definitions based on theological, philosophical, and cultural foundations as suggested by various scholars. In this part, we shall examine the Islamic worldview through the eyes of two famous scholars, Sayyid Qutb and Muhammad Iqbal. The reason I chose Sayyid Qutb and Iqbal is because each of them has an opinion on the subject, particularly Iqbal. And on the other hand, due of the differences in their life experiences and backgrounds, we can notice the diverse points of view and how they approach the associated issue for this type of topic.
