Despite the long growth of sustainable manufacturing globally over the past twenty years, present knowledge regarding the voice of the industry on the latest sustainable manufacturing application preference in Malaysian automotive manufacturing industry is lacking. This paper presents the results of a specific survey on sustainable manufacturing application in Malaysian automotive manufacturing industry. The purpose of this paper was to show new findings on the voice of the industry in terms of sustainable manufacturing application. A survey was performed in three automotive manufacturing companies named A, B and C. The names were withheld due to confidentiality requirements. Due to the similarity of company A and B, the respondents were combined and analysed as one group, whilst company C was analysed as another group. A descriptive analysis was carried out on the ordinal and categorical data. The internal consistency and reliability of the survey were established by determining the Cronbach alpha values, which was found to be 0.891 and 0.6. The results show that 90.9 per cent agreed that sustainable manufacturing principles were applied. The application of sustainable manufacturing six ‘R’ principles from highest to the lowest order was redesign, reuse, recycle, reduce, recover and remanufacture. The results clearly indicate that the automotive manufacturing industry in Malaysia embraces sustainable manufacturing applications. Continuous sustainable manufacturing training was highly recommended for successful implementation. It is also suggested that remanufacturing activities needs to be explored for product innovation and business sustainability.
