Abstract
  • The vertical green walls represent a form of public art that combines aesthetic value, environmental benefits, and economic potential to enhance urban quality of life. However, their credibility as public art remains contested. This study investigates the recognition and significance of vertical green walls from the perspective of professional landscape architects through qualitative analysis using structured interviews. Findings indicate that 66.7% of experts acknowledge vertical green walls as legitimate public art, highlighting their cultural, aesthetic, and ecological contributions. Vertical green walls advance urban sustainability by improving air quality, mitigating heat, supporting biodiversity, and fostering social engagement, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Key challenges include maintenance, financial costs, and regulatory complexities. To address these, the study recommends: (i) developing clear policies and guidelines to support vertical green walls as public art, (ii) fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among designers, artists, and policymakers, and (iii) enhancing public education and participation for long-term sustainability. These insights open pathways for integrating ecological design with artistic expression, positioning vertical green walls as a vital strategy for sustainable urban development.
