Abstract
  • Gelandangan bekas banduan sering bertumpu di sekitar Jalan Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur. Kajian ini didasari oleh Teori Interaksi Simbolik. Pengakhiran mereka sebagai gelandangan didapati berulang setiap kali dibebaskan dari penjara. Pemilihan Jalan Chow Kit sebagai destinasi pilihan atas pelbagai faktor membawa kepada persoalan tentang makna dalam kehidupan dan makna Jalan Chow Kit yang tertanam dalam diri mereka. Perasaan dekat dalam diri pada sesuatu kawasan sebenarnya mampu membina suatu makna kehidupan yang tersendiri sepanjang mereka hidup bergelandangan dan makna kawasan tersebut pada diri mereka. Sebuah kajian kualitatif telah dilakukan dengan menemubual 15 orang gelandangan bekas banduan yang memiliki kriteria inklusif iaitu tidak mempunyai tempat tinggal tetap, mempunyai rekod pemenjaraan dan merupakan warganegara Malaysia. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan wujud makna tertentu tentang kehidupan kawasan Chow Kit kepada responden kajian selaras dengan hujahan Teori Interaksi Simbolik. Dari segi tema makna dalam kehidupan, kod yang ditemui ialah ingin meneruskan menjalani kehidupan dengan biasa, bersyukur dengan apa yang ada dan berusaha memperbaiki kehidupan. Manakala bagi makna Jalan Chow Kit, tiga kod yang ditemui ialah Jalan Chow Kit dianggap sebagai ‘rumah’ dan tempat tinggal, mereka melihat Jalan Chow Kit sebagai tempat yang penuh dengan akses kepada bantuan (atau peluang) dan wujudnya rakan. Input kajian ini boleh dijadikan panduan untuk lebih memahami golongan ini, membantu memenuhi keperluan asas mereka dan seterusya mengintegrasikan semula mereka ke dalam masyarakat. Pemahaman yang bagus terhadap golongan tersebut juga mampu menghasilkan program intervensi untuk membanteras golongan gelandangan dengan lebih berkesan.
