Survey on the understanding of Malay traditional house architecture among architectural students in UiTM Seri Iskandar

Abstract
  • With the increasing globalization and modernization of architectural practices, there is a need to explore the awareness and understanding of the future generation of architects in preserving and reinterpreting traditional architectural heritage. This research study aims to investigate the understanding of undergraduate architecture students at UiTM Seri Iskandar of Malay traditional architecture design characteristics. The study utilizes a survey methodology to gather data from a sample of middle-year undergraduate architecture students from the architectural program at UiTM Seri Iskandar. The survey questionnaire consists of Likert-scale questions and open-ended inquiries to test the student's understanding and knowledge of Malay traditional architecture. The findings gained from the research showed that most of the UiTM Seri Iskandar undergraduate architecture students understand and are aware of traditional Malay house architecture. It is anticipated that the study will reveal the level of understanding among undergraduate architecture students of Malay traditional architectural design, their motivations, and the potential barriers they may encounter. The findings of this study will contribute to an understanding of how far undergraduate architecture students understand Malay traditional architectural heritage design, which will provide valuable insight to guide and improve the existing architectural education syllabus in nurturing the student towards a sustainable and culturally sensitive design in their future practice.
