Abstract
  • The proliferation of municipal solid waste (MSW) from the household sector, particularly in urban areas, calls for more proactive and preventive waste management strategies. The study focuses on precycling, a proactive practice that aims to minimise waste generation at the outset, which is not widely adopted and remains relatively understudied in Malaysia. It proposes a conceptual framework hypothesising significant positive relationships between four psychosocial factors: affective attitude, instrumental attitude, descriptive norms, injunctive norms and precycling intentions among households in the Klang Valley. By disaggregating attitudes and social norms into four distinct constructs, the study seeks to investigate their unique contributions in shaping precycling intention, thereby offering a more nuanced theoretical and conceptual understanding. A cross-sectional survey will be conducted among the households in the Klang Valley, and the data will be analysed using statistical procedures to test the hypothesised relationships. The findings are expected to offer valuable insights into the relationship between the psychosocial factors and precycling intention. These insights can inform the development of a psychologically relevant intervention and strategies to promote precycling among the target population, supporting Malaysia’s efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
