Abstract
  • The Chinese Peranakan traditional houses in Kampung Tirok, Terengganu are one of the earliest known surviving Peranakan houses in Malaysia. But these very rich homes, symbolic of a culture, are fast disappearing from the heritage map. Therefore, there is an extremely important demand to register, document and to protect those traditional craft techniques of this type of housing typology. The research looks at the traditional construction techniques used in the built form of the Chinese Peranakan house, and the building system and manner of construction conducted referred to as tanggam. The research addresses how building components were made at different stages and the individual technologies associated with them. In order to do so, that is to study and record the unique building techniques of Chinese Peranakan traditional houses, this research uses qualitative case study method. Information is gathered through fieldwork and in-depth interviews with the peoples of the place, with the experts the builders, and with the culture caretakers; which will provide an accurate and thorough insight into the traditional knowledge from these heritage buildings.
