Abstract
  • Space planning is highly important in architectural design as it determines how a space is organized and used by its occupants. In the context of globalization, numerous shopping malls have been built in industrialized areas, aiming to cater to diverse communities regardless of religion, age, or race. These malls have evolved beyond mere retail spaces, becoming popular hubs for socializing and entertainment. However, inadequate space planning in mall design can lead to discomfort and a sense of awkwardness. To address this issue, a study focused on the significance of space planning in promoting social interaction within shopping malls. The research employed systematic observation of user behaviour in a case study mall. The findings highlighted key factors for effective space planning, including sociability, accessibility, usage, and activities, as well as comfort and ambiance. The study evaluated the mall's performance in these aspects, such as the provision of seating areas, signage, safety measures, cleanliness, and green facilities. The study underscores the importance of thoughtful space planning in creating an environment that fosters social interaction in public places, specifically within shopping malls. By considering the needs and preferences of users, proper space planning can contribute to a more inviting and enjoyable experience for visitors.
