Telling history through painting: The representation of the images of Chinese revolutionary heroes in oil paintings

Abstract
  • Although research on works about historical figures exists, there are very few research achievements. Most research elaborates on the creative techniques and characteristics of the works but rarely talks about the history behind the works. Therefore, the researcher tries to use the oil paintings depicting revolutionary heroes in The Art of the Party as samples and studies how Chinese artists represent historical figures through oil paintings by analyzing documents, observing artworks, and narrating history. The researcher analyzes textual data to find the historical background of the theme and the methods used by Chinese artists to express the theme content. Then, the researcher tries to summarize the spiritual connotation contained in the work and the artistic elements and principles used by Chinese artists to express their themes. The researcher hopes to contribute a new achievement to the study of historical figures in Chinese oil paintings and enrich existing theoretical research through this study.
