Abstract
  • The Wuhu Traditional Shopping Centre is the city's main retail and cultural facility. Its concept represents and responds to the city's rich heritage, catering to the needs of the contemporary consumer. This abstract discusses some interactive design elements that could help maintain and enrich the interior of this shopping centre. The open and flexible layout maximises the facilitation of smooth wayfinding and social interaction among visitors. Integration of technology, such as digital displays and interactive information, enhances the customer experience by delivering current information about products and events. Other traditional Hui-style architectural features maintain cultural integrity, while sustainable practices involving energy-efficient lighting and greening of spaces promote environmental responsibility. Lighting design adds extra richness to the atmosphere, creating an inviting and ever-changing ambience throughout the day. Community events can be organized in multifunctional spaces within the centre, further strengthening its position as a cultural focal point. With these interactive design features, the Wuhu Traditional Shopping Centre will have secured a place for maintaining its culture and creating a better shopping experience, with its relevance in an increasingly competitive market while pride in the unique heritage of Wuhu. The method highlights a two-phase approach: there is the exploratory phase entails physical observation and survey of the various centres which include shopping centres to deduce the existing problems and consumers’ trends. The focused phase uses comparative design analysis and design interaction using results from successful renovation in Shanghai. In the study, both qualitative and comparative research approaches are applied to evaluate and improve shopping environments to develop effective design improvements as a means of meeting the needs of consumers and thus improving the shopping experience.
