Implementation of Sensory Integration Activities to Improve On-task Behaviour for Pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract
  • This study aims to improve the on-task behaviour of pupils with ASD through the implementation of sensory integration activities in their learning lessons. There were four pupils who diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder were selected and all of them was undergo sensory integration dysfunction. In this study, sensory integration activities refer to 10 activities that included tactile, visual, auditory, olfactory and gustation senses. One of the special education teachers conducted the English lesson and the other was observed with sensory integration checklist and on-task behaviour checklist. The result showed that sensory integration activities positively impacted pupils with ASD to overcome their sensory needs and provided a less restrictive learning environment to improve their on-task behavior. Apart of teachers, parents had responsible to expand the sensory integration activities at home. The frequency of sensory integration activities may influence the outcome of behavior and sensory motor performance.
