Abstract
  • This study explores the mediating role of metacognitive awareness in the relationship between self-efficacy, positive and negative emotion and listening comprehension among tertiary-level students in Malaysia. Drawing on David Nunan's concept of the "Cinderella skill," which highlights the often-overlooked importance of listening in language learning, this research presents a conceptual framework that positions metacognitive awareness as a key factor in enhancing listening comprehension. The framework illustrates how metacognitive awareness influences students' emotional and motivational states, thereby facilitating more effective listening comprehension in English as a Second Language (ESL) contexts. The findings emphasize the importance of promoting metacognitive strategies to support language learners in developing their listening skills and achieving better overall language proficiency.
