Leadership in complex context? A possible solution from theoretical perspective

Abstract
  • The current world full of uncertainties and organisations are forced to be diversified and always ready for change. Hence leadership at its core must be adaptable, contextually understandable and flexible. The one-man-show, heroic leader model is no longer popular, and leaders are perceived to be trustworthy and respected if they emphasise on empowering subordinates by sharing, not only power but also few key aspects of leading, from decision making to accountability. This paper discusses three leadership theories and models that are pertinent in constructing further work in leadership in complex context, namely Situational Leadership Theory (SLT), Competing Value Framework (CVF) and Spiritual Leadership Model (SLM). The differing perspective of each theory is presented followed by a conceptual framework of leadership in complex context. It hopes to shed light on many organisational leadership requirements, particularly the ones deemed as complex. This review should enlighten future related studies for leadership in current volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) situations faced by many organisations.
