Behaviour and contributing factors of self-harm among students of secondary schools in Selangor: School counsellors’ perspectives

Abstract
  • This study sought to investigate the self-harm behaviour and contributing factors among Selangor secondary school students from the perspective of the counsellors. The research primarily cited Linehan (2006), Nock (2009), Haniza Rais (2021), and Leonard (2021) regarding the behaviour and dimension of self-harm among teenagers, particularly school pupils. 142 counsellors in Selangor who represented a variety of genders, ethnicities, types of schools, and districts received the validated 6-Likert scale questionnaires via Telegram google-form. According to the study's findings, the statement "Client engages in self-harm to feel relieved from unpleasant feelings and thoughts" was associated with the first highest rate of self-harm activity among secondary school students. obtained a mean of 5.17 and a standard deviation of 0.81; second highest was the statement that "Clients who display self-harm may engage in cutting, burning, biting, and scratching skin" with a mean of 5.08 and a standard deviation of 0.71; and third was the statement that "Clients who self-harm is prone to suicidal attempt" with a mean of 4.94 and a standard deviation of 0.92. The results also showed that the statement "The student has a personal history of self-harm" obtained a mean of 5.10 and a standard deviation of 0.81; the second highest statement was "The student has low self-esteem and feels aimless," which had a mean of 5.07 and a standard deviation of 0.74; and the third highest statement was "The student has thoughts of harming oneself," which had a mean of 5.00 and a standard deviation of 0.73. It is hoped that the results of this study will help school counsellors improve their awareness, knowledge, interventions, and preventions of self-harm among students in nurturing first-class sejahtera human capital in a safe, harmonious school and home environment who are outstanding nationally and internationally in realising the Malaysia Development Plan 2030 and Education Blueprint 2013-2025.
