Developing an academic career development coaching model for new doctorates performance

Abstract
  • In today's dynamic higher education landscape, the integration and professional development of new doctorates within universities are crucial for institutional success. Addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by early-career academics, this research proposes a transformative Academic Career Development Coaching Model for new doctorates in Malaysian universities, particularly within the Malaysian Technical Universities Network (MTUN) institutions. This model focuses on both individual and organizational factors to foster personal and professional growth while enhancing university performance. As the global academic environment evolves, universities increasingly recognize the need for targeted support to ensure smooth transitions for new doctorates. Integrating personal aspirations, organizational dynamics, and coaching strategies within a comprehensive framework can significantly elevate academic career development initiatives. This study aims to create a model that aligns individual success with institutional excellence. The research will be conducted in two phases. Phase 1 involves in-depth interviews with 20 informants, including young lecturers (DS45), newly appointed doctorates (DS52), associate professors (DS54), and full professors (JUSA A, B, C), to explore perceptions of career coaching in MTUN institutions. Phase 2 will use self-administered questionnaires distributed to 360 respondents in MTUN institutions. Accordingly, 24 hypotheses have been developed for this study. This research is highly relevant, as there is currently a lack of empirical evidence related to an Academic Career Development Coaching Model in the Malaysian context.
