A survey of emotional wellness among the undergraduate students at UNISEL Shah Alam campus

Abstract
  • Emotional wellness plays a crucial role in a person’s overall health, impacting both their physical well-being and their capacity to manage emotions effectively. Engaging in physical activities and other lifestyle choices significantly influences mental health, and stress is a key factor in this dynamic. Stress can trigger various physiological, psychological, and emotional reactions, making its management essential, especially for college students who are often under considerable academic pressure. These undergraduate students, particularly adolescents, face distinct challenges as they navigate academic demands alongside emotional and social development. In this study, 35 undergraduate students from UNISEL Shah Alam participated by completing a Google Form survey. The survey was structured into five distinct sections: Section A gathered demographic data (like gender, marital status, and age); Section B explored factors affecting emotional wellness, such as financial concerns and family issues; Section C focused on the strategies students employ to manage stress—whether it be physical exercise, watching TV, or ensuring sufficient sleep; and Section D delved into the reasons why some students struggle to cope with stress. The confidentiality of all participants was assured, with responses treated with the highest level of privacy. The analysis of survey responses was presented using pie charts and bar graphs to visually represent the results. Understanding the root causes and consequences of academic stress is essential to developing effective interventions that enhance student mental health on campus. When stress is poorly managed, it can lead to anxiety, depression, a sense of helplessness, and an overwhelming feeling of being overloaded. Such emotional responses can impair a student’s ability to regulate their emotions, creating a cycle where rising stress levels lead to emotional instability, further increasing stress. Effectively managing stress is vital for undergraduates' mental health and overall well-being. By adopting practices like mindfulness, relaxation techniques, time management, and seeking social support, individuals can become better equipped to handle life’s challenges. Prioritizing stress management and emotional wellness can significantly reduce the negative impact of stress on mental health, even though stress is a natural part of life. Incorporating healthy habits, developing coping strategies, and reaching out for support when necessary can greatly enhance one’s physical and emotional health. In summary, proactive measures are crucial to minimizing student stress. Universities should offer counseling services, stress-reduction programs, mental health resources, and recreational activities to support students. Additionally, students should be encouraged to practice self-care, learn about stress management, and utilize a wellness center that promotes a positive emotional environment, ultimately fostering health and well-being on campus
