Abstract
  • A preliminary study was conducted by the researchers on the English language competence of the aspirants at the Aspirant Formation House in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. In the preliminary study, samples of English language tasks for the four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) assigned to the aspirants by the teachers were randomly collected for analyses in December 2021. Analysis of these language tasks showed difficulties the aspirants encountered in completing the tasks. Based on the findings, it was critical to identify the needs of the aspirants with regard to English language so as to equip them with appropriate language courses. This qualitative case study identifies significant challenges these adult ESL learners face, including limited exposure to English, insufficient instructional support, and ineffective learning strategies across the four core language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with the aspirants, priests, and teachers, revealing key themes related to the importance of English for academic achievement, effective communication, and personal confidence. Content and thematic analysis identified challenges encountered by aspirants in using English across the four language skills and the support they needed for English language skill development. The findings underscore the necessity for targeted interventions and innovative teaching methodologies to enhance language proficiency. This research contributes to the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) by providing actionable insights for curriculum developers and educators, ultimately aiming to empower aspirants in their academic and pastoral roles.
