Abstract
  • There has been high concern over the low academic performance of students in English in Malaysian schools. The current number of class periods is considered inadequate to develop proficient English speakers. Therefore, it is important to conduct activities that promote student participation and increase their interest in learning English to ensure they get enough practice and exposure. This study investigates first grade primary school students’ perceptions in participating in an English learning module that focuses on speaking, spelling, and writing. The one-day event, facilitated by six members from the Academy of Language Studies at UiTM Johor, took place at a primary school in Johor and involved 27 first-grade students. A questionnaire was distributed to all participants, with the data collected and analysed for frequency patterns. Additionally, interviews were conducted to gather feedback on their learning experiences with the module. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data, and the results indicate that the module provides positive learning experiences and fosters a supportive and dynamic environment. The significance of the study is it highlights the importance of the value of community involvement in English language education. Future research is encouraged to investigate the impact of similar modules on students' English proficiency and performance.
