Abstract
  • This study explores the motivations driving volunteerism among tertiary students in Malaysia, focusing on how these motivations influence their engagement in community service. Utilizing an online survey distributed to students in a university, the research gathers data on demographic factors, types of volunteerism and involvement in community service. A total of 121 volunteer students responded to the survey. The survey examines key aspects such as the types of community service undertaken, the number of hours dedicated to these activities, and the underlying reasons for participation. It also investigates whether students believe their volunteer work is connected to their field of study and how it impacts their overall satisfaction with the volunteer experience. By analyzing the relationship between student motivations and their volunteer activities, the study aims to uncover patterns and trends that reveal why students choose to engage in community service. The survey reveals that the types of community service do play a role in determining the motivations to be involved. However, their academic CGPA has a weak relationship with hours spent in community service. An interview was also conducted to gain more insights of the reasons behind volunteerism. Overall, students are satisfied with the experience involving community service activities. The findings are intended to provide insights for educational institutions and community organizations to better understand student engagement in volunteerism and to develop targeted strategies that align with student interests and motivations. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the factors driving student volunteerism in Malaysia and offers recommendations for enhancing community service initiates.
