Enhancing learners’ content knowledge and interest in ethnic and indigenous languages through SULAM activities

Abstract
  • Past studies on ethnic and indigenous languages mainly focus on social acceptance, ethnic tolerance, cultural appreciation, and language vitality. Little has been examined on the youths’ awareness of ethnic and indigenous languages in Malaysia. The present study attempts to investigate how SULAM activities enhance undergraduates’ sociolinguistic knowledge and deepen their interest in ethnic and indigenous languages in Malaysia. Results of the study show that students understand better about language aspects and language maintenance, while their interest in ethnic and indigenous languages has increased in several ways. SULAM implications to the higher learning institutions include improving the institutional engagement with the industry and enhancing professional engagement in the students.
