Enhancing communication and social skills of down syndrome children through a reading aloud program

Abstract
  • Individuals with Down syndrome often face difficulties with communication and social skills, which has some effect on their ability to engage in everyday interactions. This study examines the impact of a reading aloud program on the communication and social skills among children with Down syndrome. A reading aloud program was implemented to address these difficulties by promoting interactive learning. A total of 21 Down syndrome children aged 9 to 19 participated in the eight-week reading aloud sessions, using carefully selected materials. Data were collected through interviews with the special education teacher at a learning centre that supports children with Down syndrome, and the parents. Results indicate improvements in both communication and social skills of the participants. The participants demonstrated more frequent verbal interactions. Positive changes were also observed in social behaviours, such as improved communication with peers, better turn-taking, and greater engagement in group activities. The findings highlighted the potentials of reading aloud programs to support both language and social development for children with Down syndrome. It is implied that reading aloud programs be incorporated into educational curricula for children with Down syndrome, to support their social development.
