Abstract
  • This paper presents a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at addressing pollution and environmental degradation at Kelanang Beach, Kuala Langat, organised by the Academy of Language Studies, UiTM Shah Alam, in collaboration with Grundfos Pumps Sdn Bhd. The project was initiated in response to increasing beach pollution, primarily caused by plastic waste and human activity, which threatened marine life and the beach's ecological balance. The objective of the programme was to clean the beach, restore facilities, and raise environmental awareness among participants while fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and local authorities. This paper reflects on the attitude of the programme participants toward environmental preservation and how to carry out a practical environmental CSR project. A quantitative methodology was employed to measure participants’ attitudes, whilst a qualitative method was used to reflect on the programme’s flow of events. A 10-point questionnaire was distributed to 47 participants, including UiTM students and staff, as well as Grundfos employees. The survey assessed participants' recycling habits, awareness of pollution, and willingness to engage in future conservation activities. Findings revealed that 59.6% of respondents participated in a beach cleaning program for the first time, with 53.2% expressing a substantial likelihood of participating in future activities. While most participants were moderately engaged in recycling and reducing plastic use, only 8.5% consistently participated in other environmental activities. The program was rated effective in raising awareness about pollution, with 40.4% deeming it "very effective." Despite the program’s success, challenges such as time constraints and limited community involvement were noted. The study underscores the importance of CSR initiatives in fostering environmental responsibility and building partnerships between academia, industry, and local communities.
