Abstract
  • This paper examines the synthesis of national identity and contemporary compositional techniques in the vocalizing pianist works of Gao Ping, a distinguished composer-pianist whose oeuvre embodies both deep-rooted Chinese musical traditions and modern aesthetic sensibilities. Focusing primarily on his seminal work Concealed Kisses, the study explores the work's multifaceted emotional expression, the unified use of core pitch materials derived from Chinese pentatonic structures, and innovative methods of tonal embellishment and rhythmic modulation. Detailed analysis of melodic, harmonic, and formal elements across the suite's four movements reveals how Gao Ping portrays varied socio-cultural landscapes—from the hardships of daily life to reflections on globalization. The findings indicate that by employing traditional Chinese scales, dialect-inflected vocal expressions, and avant-garde piano techniques, Gao Ping establishes a unique musical language that resonates with contemporary audiences while remaining firmly anchored in national tradition. This paper offers a representative model for contemporary Chinese music education and contributes to the broader discourse on cross-cultural musical innovation.
