Abstract
  • The construction industry in Malaysia faces persistent challenges in ensuring worker safety and health, despite various safety protocols and regulations. Accidents and injuries continue to be a significant issue on construction sites, particularly among G7 contractors in Selangor. This study aims to identify the key challenges that G7 contractors encounter in implementing safety and health practices. A quantitative research approach was employed, using a survey questionnaire to gather data from a sample of 100 G7 contractors in Selangor, drawn from a population of 3,522 companies registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). Convenience sampling was used due to time and accessibility constraints. Descriptive statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS software by calculating mean scores to determine the challenges. The findings reveal that the top three challenges are financial constraints, cultural attitudes and behaviour, and limited access to personal protective equipment (PPE). Other significant challenges include resistance to change, inadequate training, poor safety culture, long working hours, communication barriers, lack of leadership commitment, and insufficient incentives for safety compliance. This research is significant in helping to reduce workplace accidents and fatalities, enhancing the reputation of the construction industry, and fostering a safer working environment in Malaysia’s construction sector.
