Situation analysis to understand the patient safety context at primary and secondary health care facilities in Bangladesh

Abstract
  • Patient safety is one of the major sectors of healthcare system. In developing countries like Bangladesh it is essential to establish the components of patient safety according to standard guideline to ensure a healthy nation. The study was done to explore the current situation of patient safety at primary and secondary healthcare facilities in Bangladesh. A qualitative and document review study was conducted during 1st March 2018 to 10th March 2018 on health Managers and store keepers of district hospitals and upazila (sub-district) health complexes. KII (n=7), IDI (n=7) were performed in the 3 district hospitals and 4 upazila health complexes. Thematic analysis was performed on different pertinent factors related to patient safety. Health managers mentioned that they have heard about patient safety but no one has the exact conception on it. As there is no protocol available patient safety as whole or specific sectors of patient safety, managers couldn’t maintain patient safety procedure properly. They also mentioned about lack of human resource is one of the big challenges for them. Store keepers’ said logistics and supplied medicines are not sufficient for indoor and out patients. A well-structured protocol is essential to ensure the patient safety of patients and healthcare providers as well. Proper patient safety practice is essential in health facilities of Bangladesh. It is very important to ensure the patient safety properly at these facilities. If patient safety can be establish properly at hospitals like other developed and SEA countries, then morbidity and mortality rate will decrease.
