Abstract
  • Language anxiety is a significant barrier for ESL learners, particularly among Malaysian Chinese tertiary students, where cultural background plays an important role. This research investigates how cultural factors such as family expectations, home language use, and societal norms influence students’ confidence and comfort in using English. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study incorporates a survey to measure levels of language anxiety and in-depth interviews to explore individual experiences and coping strategies. Findings reveal that cultural values, including respect for authority and the concept of “face,” contribute to heightened anxiety, while strategies like preparation and practice, peer collaboration, and use of technology help mitigate its effects. The study underscores the need for teaching practices and targeted interventions that are mindful of learners’ unique backgrounds to support ESL learners in overcoming language anxiety.
