Effect of city bus behavior on pedestrian road crossing at intersections in non-lane based heterogenous traffic condition

Abstract
  • Pedestrian road-crossing behaviour concerning city bus behavior at intersections is essential for analyzing the safety and convenience of intersections for pedestrians. Here pedestrian road-crossing behaviour has been studied at Motijheel Shapla Chattar intersection and Kakrail intersection. Pedestrian behaviour with passenger boarding-alighting of buses, road-crossing characteristics for different traffic condition, and utilization of foot overbridge have been analyzed. The frequency and characteristics of passenger boarding-alighting of buses, utilization of foot-overbridge, pedestrian road crossing speed, obstacles, waiting behaviour, etc have been investigated concerning vehicle speed and headway with direct observation and video recording. Related pedestrian opinions on safety and problem faced by them have been studied by questionnaire survey. Planned allocation of boarding-alighting area for buses can improve the pedestrian road crossing behaviour at intersections.
