Abstract
This study conducts a systematic literature review to explore the current AI-assisted listening teaching and tools for addressing the cognitive load on Chinese university students learning English. This paper explores the previous existing literature within the period of 15 years, from 2010-2025, by applying the PRISMA 2020 framework to explore the effect of AI- generated listening activities on the intrinsic, extrinsic, and extraneous cognitive load exerted on students in comprehending English while indulging in listening. This study specifically focuses on the analysis and synthesis of findings from empirical and theoretical research published in peer-reviewed journals, aiming to understand the effect of AI-assisted English teaching tools on the three patterns of cognitive load. This was assisted by AI-assisted literature retrieval using ResearchRabbit, a literature mapping tool, to conduct analysis of the identified literature to ensure comprehensiveness and technicalities. Thus, this study reviewed recent methodological trends and identify gaps in addressing cultural and linguistic factors in developing AI-aided curricula for learners facing issues in comprehending English as a foreign language, such as Chinese university students, while recommending teaching practices for Chinese English teachers.
