Abstract
  • This study analysed the historical evolution and cultural and social contributions of Malaysian female artists by evaluating the works of Khatijah Sanusi ("Anugerah II") and Nirmala Dutta ("Kenyataan 3"). It found that female artists in Malaysia have evolved from being marginalised figures in a male-dominated field to becoming recognised contributors to the nation's cultural identity. The works show preservation and reinterpretation of Malay artistic traditions. Inclusion of women in the Malay art scene has guaranteed the continuity of local artistic heritage by fusing Islamic, Malay and modern artistic styles. The shift from conventional aesthetics to more abstract and experimental expressions can be noticed. Nirmala's work is an example of using art as a way to take part in feminist discourse. According to this research, women artists have made significant contributions to both cultural continuity and progressive change in Malaysia. Malay traditional motifs, batik patterns and influences of Islamic art is preserved through works like Anugerah II. Moving beyond decorative art, female artists have experimented with political themes and abstract art forms, as seen in Nirmala Dutt’s work.
