Abstract
  • This study is focusing on the performance of the existing road due to the increasing number of traffic generated in the vicinity of the proposed development of Sibu Central. The proposed development will become main attraction in Sibu as this development is considered as transportation hub for peoples mainly stays in Sarawak to commute to other places. Two signalized intersections were selected which believes will receive significant impact upon the development is completed. SIDRA software is used throughout this study to reveal the existing road performance after the completion of Sibu Central. Due to the increasing number of traffic generated by this development, several issues has been encountered in this study such as the deterioration of the Level of Service (LOS), increased in average delay and increased in queue length of the existing road performance. This contribute to bad traffic conditions as the existing road failed to cater the increasing number of traffic volume which exceed the capacity of the existing road. This condition will result uneasiness for the commuters to use the road as the declination of the traffic flow. Hence, to encounter this issues, Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) is implemented in this study to foresee the actual existing road performance prior to development, during and after the development is completed. Increasing the signal phase timing and adding number of lanes are two mitigation measures adapted in this study based on TIA analysis. The evaluation of the existing road performance for both intersections will be furthered discussed in this paper.
