Wave generator to power Sinamalé Bridge: a pilot study

Abstract
  • Varunulaa Raalhugandu is a region in the northeastern side of Malé, the capital of Maldives, where ocean waves exist throughout the year. This study was carried out to find if it is possible to power the street lights of the SinaMalé bridge (the bridge that connects Malé and Hulhulé) with energy harnessed from the waves of Varunulaa Raalhugandu. The study indicates that technically it is possible to build a wave energy generator capable of powering all the streetlights of the bridge without interfering the navigation of the sea vessels as well as having no major environmental impact.
