Abstract
  • Social support plays a crucial role in the development and success of elite wheelchair athletes. However, these athletes face numerous challenges, including resource constraints, a shortage of qualified coaches, financial difficulties, and psychological stress. This study aims to explore the obstacles encountered by coaches and team managers in providing social support and to identify effective strategies for enhancing the performance of Malaysia’s elite wheelchair athletes. Using a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, data were collected through in-depth interviews with five coaches and team managers at the Kg Pandan Paralympic Excellence Center. Findings reveal several key challenges, including difficulties in recruiting and retaining players, financial limitations, inadequate training facilities, and significant psychological stress among athletes. To address these issues, the study identifies several strategic solutions, such as improved training coordination, enhanced financial assistance, better psychological support programs, and a more systematic approach to athlete development. By offering a holistic framework for athlete support, this study makes a significant contribution to the field of Paralympic sports in Malaysia. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, sports organizations, and coaching professionals to improve the development and performance of elite wheelchair athletes at both national and international levels.
