Abstract
The new female images in Su Qing's works emerged from the social transformations during the late Qing Dynasty and the ideological movements advocating freedom and equality. Viewed from the perspective of urban life in Shanghai's occupied areas in the 1940s, these female images exhibit distinct characteristics. In contrast to other wartime literature of the same period, Su Qing's works are less political, focusing instead on women's daily lives and inner worlds, revealing the intricate relationship between traditional female roles and modernity. This unique literary expression, shaped by a specific historical context, was largely overlooked due to the dominant research perspectives of the time. It was only in the 1980s, with the revaluation of literature from the occupied areas, that its significance was reassessed. Su Qing's works not only highlighted the representation of women in modern Chinese literature but also offered new frameworks for analyzing gender issues within the broader process of China's modernization.
