Gen Y: a study on social media use and outcomes

Abstract
  • Social media usage has become the most popular tool on the web. There are a billion registered users for the social networking websites worldwide. This is because, social media is technology that has revolutionized the way people communicate and interact in their daily lives. The purpose of this study was to examine the usage of social media among foundation students as they are considered the Y generation as well as to show the usage of social media in a campus environment can have outcomes for the students. Among the objective is to explore the popularity of the social media sites and to find out the purpose of social media use. Two variables have been used; usage and outcomes. In this study, a survey was administered to a sample of 185 foundation students aged 18 to 30 years. The results of this study found that all of the sampled foundation students were using at least one form of social media website. Findings indicated that Facebook is the most popular social media used by respondents. Findings disclosed that there is a positive outcome exists on students’ academic performance from the social media usage.
