Abstract
  • Depression is a prominent mental health disorder identified by continual feelings of sorrow, despair, and a lack of enthusiasm for activities that were previously pleasurable. Among university students, it is a common issue as they face various challenges while striving for academic success. Understanding the factors leading to depression in undergraduates in Malaysia is crucial, and this study aims to shed light on the issue while spreading awareness and challenging societal stigmas. To achieve this, a survey was conducted, involving 50 students from different universities and courses in Malaysia. The questionnaire was distributed through social media platforms and covered five key domains: Academic stress, Financial problems, Social lifestyle, Family dynamics, and Personality traits. The survey results highlighted academic stress as the most prominent factor associated with depression among respondents. The pressures of academic responsibilities and the pursuit of excellence seemed to heavily impact the students' mental well-being. This finding emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to address academic-related stressors and support students' mental health. The existence of depression issues among Malaysian undergraduates calls for serious attention from educational institutions, mental health professionals, and policymakers. By understanding the contributing factors, raising awareness, and dispelling stigmas surrounding mental health, we can foster a healthier and more fulfilling university experience for students in Malaysia and beyond.
