Abstract
  • Kajian ini memfokuskan kepada usaha-usaha kolonial British dalam pembangunan perkhidmatan pos di Negeri-Negeri Selat pada tahun 1902 hingga 1938 dan sumbangannya kepada masyarakat dan pentadbiran British. Kebanyakan kajian lepas dalam aspek perhubungan lebih tertumpu kepada perkembangan landasan kereta api dan jalan raya pada era pentadbiran British. Namun, perkhidmatan pos juga merupakan salah satu elemen penting dalam sistem perhubungan pada era tersebut yang banyak memberi manfaat kepada masyarakat dan pentadbiran British. Oleh itu, kajian ini akan membincangkan usaha-usaha yang dilakukan oleh kolonial British dalam menaik taraf perkhidmatan pos di Negeri-Negeri Selat dan sumbangannya kepada masyarakat serta pentadbiran. Penelitian adalah berdasarkan metodologi sejarah dengan menjadikan bahan primer seperti fail, laporan, dan statistik dalam fail kolonial CO273 Colonial Office: Straits Settlements Original Correspondence dan CO275 Colonial Office: Straits Settlements Sessional Papers sebagai sumber analisis utama. Kajian mendapati bahawa British telah membawa pembaharuan dan sentiasa meningkatkan kualiti perkhidmatan pos di Negeri-Negeri Selat. Pembaharuan ini seterusnya telah memberi manfaat kepada masyarakat terutamanya memudahkan urusan harian selain menyumbang dalam melicinkan urusan pentadbiran British dengan adanya perkhidmatan pos yang baik dan efektif.
