Jenayah dan kepanikan moral: kajian kes pemberitaan rogol-bunuh dalam akhbar terpilih di Malaysia

Abstract
  • Pengalaman dan pemahaman kita tentang masyarakat dan masalah sosial banyak diperoleh daripada berita yang dipaparkan dalam media massa, terutamanya berita tentang jenayah. Ini kerana kebanyakan orang mempunyai pengetahuan yang terhad tentang jenayah. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidik bagaimana akhbar berlainan bahasa di Malaysia membina makna “jenayah” dan seterusnya mengkaji implikasi jenis pemberitaan ini terhadap masyarakat dari segi kebangkitan panik moral. Dua kes rogol-bunuh yang paling tinggi pelaporannya di Malaysia dua dekad kebelakangan ini, iaitu kes Canny Ong Lay Kian dan Noritta Samsudin, telah diambil sebagai kajian kes. Kaedah kualitatif dilengkapi dengan kaedah kuantitatif, iaitu analisa wacana kritikal dan analisa kandungan telah digunakan dalam kajian ini. Kajian ini menyimpulkan bahawa memang wujudnya kesensasian berita jenayah pada tahap yang berlainan dalam akhbar pelbagai bahasa di Malaysia. Pemahaman ahli masyarakat tentang jenayah membawa implikasi yang besar dan berpanjangan dari segi order sosial, penggubalan undang-undang dan kod moral. Kesensasian tersebut telah membangkitkan kepanikan moral dalam kalangan ahli masyarakat di Malaysia. Orang awam memberikan reaksi yang berlebihan ke atas kes rogol-bunuh yang berlaku. Desakan telah diberikan kepada pihak pemerintah untuk menggubal atau memperketat undang-undang yang sedia ada. Dengan adanya mandat yang diberikan oleh masyarakat secara sukarela, status quo pihak pemerintah dikekalkan, malah diperkukuhkan.
