Preschool Teachers’ Pedagogical Approaches in Teaching Early Literacy: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract
  • This study focused on a systematic literature review (SLR) of preschool teachers’ pedagogical approaches in teaching early literacy. This paper methodology referred to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) and Population, Interest and Context (PICo). 28 papers were selected in this paper which were published between 2020 and 2024, that are only focused at journal articles in Open-Source format and English-published articles. Result of this paper shows nine themes, namely (i) play-based activities, (ii) reading and story-telling activities, (iii) writing and pre-writing, (iv) fine motor skills and visual activities, (v) language support, (vi) multimodal approach, (vii) collaborative approach, (viii) student-centred activity, (ix) technology and digital appliances application. This paper shows the varieties of teaching early literacy approaches. It is crucial to teachers in understanding and learning the need and suitability of each approach in enhancing students’ early literacy skills.
