Abstract
  • Extralinguistic factors play a crucial role in interactive processes and have a significant impact on the transmission and reception of information that is important for the mastery of Arabic. These factors include attitudes, motivation, environmental influences, usage patterns, communicative challenges, and teacher encouragement. One of the biggest challenges for teachers is the difficulty students have in mastering vocabulary. This issue is often compounded by a general lack of interest and engagement with learning materials and environments that do not inspire curiosity or promote a positive learning experience. These factors may prevent students from fully absorbing and retaining vocabulary, thereby hindering their language development. This pilot study aims to investigate the role of extralinguistic factors inside and outside the classroom in improving students' Arabic vocabulary proficiency. Using qualitative methods, the study conducts a thematic analysis based on semi-structured interviews with three purposively selected respondents from SMA Khairiah Segamat (SEMARAK) in Johor, Malaysia. The results indicate that extralinguistic factors within the classroom include the availability of resources such as Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) projectors, effective classroom activities, and teaching methods that actively engage students. Extralinguistic factors outside the classroom, such as access to study spaces (school hall and library), in-service training opportunities, and robust educational management planning, also play a critical role in supporting students' learning processes. In conclusion, this study emphasises the importance of these extralinguistic factors in enhancing Arabic vocabulary proficiency. It highlights how these factors contribute to expanding vocabulary beyond the classroom and fostering a more authentic and practical mastery of Arabic. By addressing these factors, educators can better support students in overcoming challenges to vocabulary acquisition and improve their overall language proficiency.
