Abstract
This study addresses the limited consideration of elderly needs in the design of physical and outdoor environments, particularly concerning leisure activities and social interaction in public spaces. Focusing on the Heritage Trail in Ipoh's Concubine Lane, the research assesses the satisfaction of elderly individuals with existing design criteria related to outdoor spaces and buildings. Employing a quantitative approach with purposive sampling, data was collected through questionnaires (n=76) and on-site observation. Analysis revealed deficiencies in safety, cleanliness, and essential facilities such as toilets, benches, and seating areas, as well as a need for improved canopies. Recommendations include the addition of seating, retractable canopies, and enhanced pedestrian crossings. The findings suggest that a holistic, strategic approach is necessary for local authorities to ensure that public spaces in heritage areas cater to all age groups. This study contributes practical insights for creating more inclusive and age-friendly environments within the Heritage Trail of Ipoh, Concubine Lane.
