Abstract
  • The rapid shift towards online learning in China's higher education, particularly in Jiangxi province, prompted by both technological advancement and external contingencies like the COVID-19 pandemic, necessitates a deeper understanding of its effects on student performance. This study aims to investigate the impact of online learning effectiveness, environment, and technology usage characteristics on students' academic achievements. Employing a quantitative research design, the study collected data through structured questionnaires from a sample of 50 teachers and 360 students across three universities in Jiangxi. The research adopted a positivist philosophy to ensure objective and systematic data analysis, with SPSS utilized for statistical evaluation. A purposive non-probabilistic sampling method was used to target relevant individuals, acknowledging the limitations in generalizability. The findings indicated that online learning platforms, when supported by appropriate technological infrastructure and digital literacy, can significantly influence academic performance. Time management, enhanced interaction, and student engagement emerged as pivotal factors contributing to the effectiveness of online learning. Moreover, the study revealed that students' and teachers' experiences with online learning vary, with a notable impact on teaching strategies and student participation. The study concludes that online learning can be a viable alternative to traditional classroom education if integrated thoughtfully with attention to technological and pedagogical support. Implications for policy and practice include the need for investment in digital infrastructure, teacher training in online pedagogies, and development of online curriculum that accommodates the diverse needs of students. This research contributes to the body of knowledge on e-learning and serves as a reference for future educational reforms, promoting a more flexible, inclusive, and resilient education system.
