Evaluating al-Qur'an memorization outcomes among SABK students in the context of the tahfiz model Ulul Albab (TMUA)

Abstract
  • The Ulul Albab program, initially launched through the establishment of Sekolah Menengah Imtiaz by the Terengganu Foundation, has garnered significant attention from the Ministry of Education, prompting the adoption of the Tahfiz Model Ulul Albab (TMUA) curriculum nationwide. Despite its decade-long implementation since 2014, persistent challenges remain, particularly regarding students' ability to successfully memorize the Al-Qur'an. Prior research has shown that a considerable number of TMUA students struggle to complete the memorization of all 30 juzuk of the Al-Qur’an within the five-year timeframe designated by the Ministry. This study seeks to assess the extent of Al-Qur'an memorization achievement among students at Sekolah Agama Bantuan Kerajaan (SABK) over a five-month period. Data were collected between March and August 2023, focusing on students' progress in memorizing the Al-Qur'an as per the established curriculum guidelines. The findings reveal that fewer than half of the SABK schools achieved over 50% success in meeting the memorization goals, leading to a significant portion of students failing to complete the memorization of the Al-Qur'an as expected. These results highlight ongoing difficulties within the TMUA framework and suggest the need for further improvements to ensure higher student success rates in Al-Qur'an memorization.
