Impact of discipline on students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools in Minna Metropolis, Niger state, Nigeria

Abstract
  • The study investigated the impact of discipline on students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools in Minna metropolis, Niger State, Nigeria. Knowledge of the student academic performance has received lots of attention in relation to discipline. However, much of the attention given was towards self – discipline rather than social skills discipline such as politeness, obedience and competence. The paper used survey research design where a total of three hundred and eighty-one (381) students were randomly selected from six (6) out of the ten (10) senior secondary schools in the metropolis. Questionnaires were used to collect data. Frequency count, simple percentage, t-test, mean and standard deviation were used for analyzing the data. The study revealed that there is significant difference between disciplined students and indiscipline students in terms of academic performance in senior secondary schools in Minna metropolis, Niger state. The study also found that no significant difference exists between academic performance of male and female students in Senior Secondary School in Minna. The study recommended that; the school environment should be conducive to encourage the students’ learning while discipline should be exercised moderately so as not to affect the students’ academic performance as thorough discipline does not encourage positively for all students.
