The study of the properties of cryptocurrency markets has just recently begun to comprehend the numerous market facets. This paper, therefore, represents a fundamental effort in conducting a thorough review of cryptocurrency literature. Following a systematic approach, 2085 peer-reviewed journal papers were selected and included in this bibliometric review to evaluate the intellectual expansion of the area. Propositions, future routes, and implications are also offered based on content-coding, clustering, and research suggestions. According to the analysis, prior research has focused on price performance, market efficiency, hedging, and the safe haven of cryptocurrencies. Nevertheless, the findings documented in the literature are inconclusive, pointing to the need for more work on these areas. Also, regardless of its rapid growth, academic research on cryptocurrency is still in its evolving stage, especially since scholars did not pay close attention to this financial advancement precisely because scholars did not focus their attention on this financial innovation. These results are essential for investors and policymakers because cryptocurrency is a financial asset that is unrelated to central bank initiatives.
