Navigating challenges to enhance accountability: The role of information technology in Malaysia's public sector

Abstract
  • The aim of this research is to examine the crucial function of Information Technology (IT) in enhancing accountability in the public sector of Malaysia. With the introduction of e-government and other digitalisation initiatives, IT integration has significantly enhanced service delivery, operational efficiency, and transparency in Malaysia. The Malaysian government is dedicated to modernising public services in accordance with international trends and the Sustainable Development Goals, as guided by the Public Sector ICT Strategic Plan 2021–2025. The study reveals that adopting IT can lead to increased productivity, better communication, and more responsibility. However, it also draws attention to important issues including the digital divide, cybersecurity flaws, reluctance among employees to embrace change, inadequate IT infrastructure, and convoluted procurement procedures. The paper highlights the need for efficient communication and focused training, and it promotes simplified.
