Abstract
  • The rise of international tourism to Muslim-majority countries, like Malaysia, has created new opportunities for cross-cultural understanding. The Islamic Propagation Society International (IPSI), a globally recognized organization, has been instrumental in facilitating such interactions through mosque-based programs aimed at engaging non-Muslim tourists. Despite the significance of these initiatives, limited documentation exists on IPSI’s specific methods for training and developing Muslim preachers to conduct effective and respectful interactions with tourists. This gap underscores the need to explore the strategies employed to equip preachers with the skills and knowledge required for meaningful dialogue within a mosque setting. This study investigates IPSI’s training methodologies for preparing Muslim preachers to interact with non-Muslim tourists. A qualitative research design was employed, combining semi-structured interviews with IPSI personnel and content analysis of mosque program materials. The interviews explored the structure of training processes, the development of program content, and the challenges and achievements encountered. Content analysis focused on identifying recurring themes, pedagogical approaches, and reading materials relevant to preacher development. Findings indicate that IPSI adopts a multifaceted training model encompassing theoretical instruction on Islam, interfaith dialogue, and cultural sensitivity, complemented by practical sessions on communication techniques, active listening, and addressing misconceptions about Islam. The training emphasizes Islam’s universal values of peace, compassion, and tolerance through relatable examples that highlight shared human values. Key challenges include managing the diverse backgrounds of tourists, navigating cultural differences, and preserving the authenticity of Islamic teachings when addressing non-Muslim audiences. Notable successes involve positive tourist feedback and the establishment of a welcoming environment conducive to interfaith dialogue. Overall, this study offers valuable insights into IPSI’s preacher development strategies and provides practical recommendations for organizations seeking to enhance interfaith engagement through similar initiatives.
