Abstract
  • This study investigates the abandonment of traditional Malay houses, particularly in Perak Tengah, Malaysia. These houses are vital cultural heritage symbols representing Malay architectural style and craftsmanship, but their numbers have significantly declined due to inadequate maintenance, urbanization, and a lack of awareness among younger generations about their cultural significance. The research aims to identify the extent of abandoned traditional Malay houses in Perak Tengah and explore the underlying factors contributing to their neglect, employing qualitative methods such as site observations, surveys, and interviews to gather data on their condition and perceptions. The findings reveal fewer traditional Malay houses remain in Perak Tengah, with many facing deterioration due to financial constraints and a scarcity of skilled artisans capable of preserving their original character. This study highlights the urgent need for community awareness and action to preserve these architectural treasures, ensuring future generations can appreciate and maintain their cultural heritage, and has the potential to foster greater understanding and appreciation of traditional Malay architecture and encourage preservation efforts within the community. The questionnaire was distributed involved 50 respondents from district in Perak Tengah which is, Bota, Parit, Kg. Gajah, Lambor Kanan and Lambor Kiri.
