Abstract
  • A flood is a hydrological phenomenon caused by overflow drains, rivers, or streams, usually after heavy rains. Kemaman, Terengganu is one of the regions that frequently experiences flooding, particularly during the northeast monsoon, which takes place annually from November to March. The increasing flood crisis in Kemaman has rising the need for studies to improve the flood management. This study focusses on the creation of a flood risk area map for Kemaman, which employs the ranking and weightage sum methods to reclassify flood risk factors. The objectives of this study are to prepare flood risk area map and to identify the flood risk area in Kemaman, Terengganu. In order to achieve the objectives, Geographic Information System (GIS) approach has been utilized. Factors affecting the flood risk are determined and allocated with a weightage based on its importance in contributing to the flood risk. The ranking method was then used to reclassify the values of each factor based on the risk levels. The final result was obtained using the weighted sum technique, producing the flood risks area for Kemaman based on five (5) level of risks; very high, high, moderate, low and very low. High-risk locations were primarily located in low level areas and along riverbanks, whereas high areas were less risky. The production of this flood risk map will provide information for disaster management and mitigation planning.
