Enhancing travelers’ walkability in Malacca heritage town: Assessing the pedestrian experience

Abstract
  • This study examines the walkability of travelers in Malacca Heritage Town by assessing the pedestrian experience, in a world heritage site recognized by UNESCO. This study focuses on Jalan Hang Jebat, Jalan Hang Lekiu, Jalan Hang Lekir, Jalan Hang Kasturi, Jalan Tukang Emas, Jalan Tukang Besi, Jalan Tokong, Jalan Kampung Pantai, Jalan Kampung Kuli, and Lorong Hang Jebat. Malacca Heritage Town attracts many travelers every year, making walkability an important aspect of enhancing the travelers experience and supporting sustainable tourism. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the existing conditions of pedestrian walkway in the study area, to evaluate the level of travelers' satisfaction with pedestrian walkways, as well as to propose design criteria to improve pedestrian walkway connectivity in the study area. Research data was obtained through observation, and questionnaire survey that were distributed to travelers in the study area. The result of the study shows that factors such as accessibility, safety, comfort and integration with public transport play an important role in influencing the experience and satisfaction of pedestrian travelers. Based on these findings, several recommendations have been made including improving the connectivity, comfort and safety of pedestrian walkways, involving local people and adding attractive elements to attract travelers. With these improvements, it is hoped that Malacca Heritage Town will offer a more comfortable and safe walking experience to travelers.
